Counselling vs Psychology vs Coaching: what's the difference?

If you've ever wondered whether to see a psychologist, a Counsellor or a Coach, you're not alone in finding it confusing.

The language overlaps. The websites all sound similar. And when you're already tired from doing the work on yourself, you don't need to spend energy working out which door to knock on.

So here's a plain-language guide.

At a glance

Psychology

  • Focus: diagnosing and treating mental health conditions
  • Referral: a GP referral and mental health care plan are usually needed for Medicare-subsidised sessions

Counselling

  • Focus: past experiences, relationships, self-worth and emotional regulation
  • Referral: none needed

Coaching

  • Focus: the future, your goals, decisions and next steps
  • Referral: none needed

Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. Psychologists are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions using research-based treatment plans.

Psychology suits:

  • Complex mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression and PTSD
  • Clinical assessment and structured treatment
  • Acute distress or crisis support

Access: usually a GP referral and a mental health care plan for Medicare-subsidised sessions, with a limited number of sessions each year. Waitlists are common.

Psychology helps you understand the "why" through a clinical lens.

Counselling

As a qualified Counsellor, I offer a therapeutic space to explore emotional challenges, relationships, and the patterns that keep showing up in your life.

Counselling doesn't require a diagnosis. It meets you where you are.

Counselling suits:

  • Processing past experiences, grief and relationship difficulties
  • Exploring identity, self-worth and what you value
  • Building emotional regulation and self-awareness

Access: no referral needed. Access is usually flexible and timely.

Counselling helps you understand where you've been, so you can begin to move forward.

Coaching

Coaching is future-focused. It's less about unpacking the past and more about clarity, patterns and deliberate next steps.

As a Coach trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), I work with the way your mind organises meaning, so we can interrupt patterns at the level where they form.

Coaching suits:

  • Goal-setting, decision-making and building momentum
  • Shifting mindset and habitual responses
  • Reconnecting with your own direction and inner resources

Access: no referral needed.

Coaching is about moving from confusion to clarity, and from clarity to action.

You don't need a diagnosis to deserve support

A label can put someone in a box. I'd rather meet you where you are.

Sometimes what looks like a symptom is a very logical response to an illogical situation. If that resonates with you, Counselling and Coaching may suit you better than a clinical pathway.

That isn't a criticism of psychology. It's about what each kind of support is designed to do.

Why I combine Counselling and Coaching

At Recreate Counselling, I work with women who have left a controlling relationship and keep finding the same kind of man.

On the one hand, Counselling on its own can keep you circling the same material, and yet on the other hand, Coaching on its own can skip over the part that needs attention.

So I combine them.

The Counselling side makes space to process what happened, understand the patterns, and work with what's still running in the background.

The NLP-based Coaching side works with those patterns at the level of identity and belief, and with what you'd like to build next.

I also draw on Clinical Hypnotherapy where it's useful, for the parts of a pattern that don't respond to reasoning alone.

All sessions are online, by secure video, anywhere in Australia or overseas.

If you're not sure where to start

Here's what I would like you to consider.

If you've already done a lot of the reading and the reflecting, and you still keep ending up in the same place, that isn't a failure of insight. It's a sign that the approach matters as much as the effort.

I'd encourage you to start somewhere. The wrong door is still a door.
